It can also become a quiet way of disappearing from a relationship.

Some people are genuinely flexible. They do not need to control every plan, and they are comfortable accommodating others. The difficulty begins when flexibility is driven by fear: fear of seeming demanding, creating conflict, being rejected, or discovering that one’s preferences do not matter.

A person may agree to the restaurant, the family visit, the financial decision, or the holiday arrangement while privately hoping their partner will notice the hesitation. When that does not happen, disappointment grows.

The other person may be unaware that any sacrifice has occurred. They heard agreement and acted on it. Meanwhile, the person who kept saying “I don’t mind” begins to feel unseen and taken for granted.

This can produce a particularly confusing form of resentment.
